Research Focused on End-Stage Renal Disease Patients Receiving More Frequent Hemodialysis in Skilled Nursing Facilities
BROOKLYN, N.Y April 26, 2022 — Dialyze Direct, the nation’s leading provider of home hemodialysis services in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs), is pleased to announce that its findings about the effect of more frequent dialysis (MFD) for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients in SNFs were peer-reviewed by Hemodialysis International, and published in the article, “Post-Dialysis Recovery Time in ESRD Patients Receiving More Frequent Hemodialysis in Skilled Nursing Facilities.”
The research determined that more rapid post-dialysis recovery time (DRT) occurred in patients receiving five dialysis treatments each week, instead of DRT reported for the conventional approach of three weekly treatments. In addition, rapid recovery is associated with reduced mortality and fewer hospitalizations.
“With conventional dialysis, nursing home patients typically require a prolonged period of time to recover from the effects of each dialysis treatment. Our findings in this patient population receiving more frequent dialysis show patients are able to participate in activities much sooner post-dialysis,” said Alice Hellebrand, chief nursing officer and senior vice president at Dialyze Direct and a co-author of the article. “Nearly 80% of the patients reported recovering in an hour or less, and 92% recovered in less than two hours.”
From November 4, 2019, through June 11, 2021, Dialyze Direct medical professionals asked patients receiving MFD (at least 14 treatment hours each week) at their associated SNFs across 12 states to describe their DRT following their treatment. The predefined DTR categories were 0-½ hour, ½-1 hour, 1-2 hours, 2-4 hours, 4-8 hours, 8-12 hours, by next morning, or not even by the next morning. Of the patients that met the statistical modeling inclusion criteria, 92% reported DRT of two hours or less. Lower odds of rapid DRT were observed for patients who were older, missed their previous treatment or experienced adialytic hypotension complications. Greater odds of rapid DRT were observed in patients receiving five dialyses in the previous week or having 160-179 mmHg pre-hemodialysis systolic blood pressure.
“The results are encouraging for patients and providers who have been seeking ways to improve the quality of life for SNF patients” said Dialyze Direct’s Chief Medical Officer, one of the senior authors of the article, Dr. Allen Kaufman. “As we continue our efforts to systematically learn what is of benefit to the SNF dialysis population, we view these results as highly promising in potentially enhancing the ability of our patients to participate in rehabilitation and restorative services while living in the SNF, which will be the subject of our next set of studies.”
The article was co-authored by Eran Y. Bellin, M.D., Infectious Disease, Departments of Epidemiology & Population Health and Medicine, Albert Einstein College of Medicine; Alice M. Hellebrand, MSN, RN, CNN, Chief Nursing Officer and Senior Vice President, Dialyze Direct; Steven M Kaplan, Data Scientist, Dialyze Direct; Jordan G Ledvina, Chief Information Officer, Dialyze Direct; William T Markis, Writing Consultant, WTM Consulting; Nathan W Levin, M.D., Internal Medicine, Chair of the Medical Advisory Board and Director of Research, Mount Sinai Icahn School of Medicine; Allen M Kaufman, M.D., Chief Medical Officer and Senior VP for Clinical & Scientific Affairs, Dialyze Direct.

BROOKLYN, N.Y April 23, 2022 — Dialyze Direct, the nation’s leading provider of home hemodialysis services in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs), is pleased to announce that it will be an exhibitor at Becker’s Hospital Review’s 12th Annual Meeting this week in Chicago, as the healthcare media company returns to an in-person event this year.
As part of its exhibit, Dialyze Direct will be showcasing the results from its recent research, peerreviewed and published in Hemodialysis International, which demonstrates the correlation between more frequent dialysis (MFD) and more rapid post-dialysis recovery time (DRT) for endstage renal disease (ESRD) patients in SNFs.
Those findings add to Dialyze Direct’s previously published research providing additional evidence that higher acuity ESRD patients are able to receive clinically appropriate care in nonhospital settings, creating expanded discharge opportunities for this clinically challenging population. For hospitals and payers seeking value-based care and the best possible therapies and outcomes for patients, the data exhibits the advantages of MFD and DRT, which lend to reduced mortality and fewer hospitalizations. SNFs will also find the data advantageous as they look to build and improve relationships with hospitals and payers.
In addition to its proven clinical and quality of life benefits, the company’s congregate care model overcomes long standing socio-economic barriers associated with home hemodialysis, allowing all SNF-residents, including members of historically marginalized communities access to Dialyze Direct’s model of care and its superior clinical and quality of life outcomes.
Starting late last year and continuing into the first quarter of 2022, Dialyze Direct experienced a period of strategic growth and collaboration. This month, the company completed its previously announced acquisition of Compass Home Dialysis, a regional dialysis provider in Pennsylvania with on-site dialysis services in nine SNFs, as well as an outpatient dialysis clinic. Late last year, Dialyze Direct acquired Renew Dialysis, a regional SNF dialysis provider in Ohio and Virginia. And recently the company signed a Letter of Intent to collaborate with fellow dialysis provider Satellite Healthcare. Those moves continue to set Dialyze Direct’s position as the leading SNF dialysis provider in the United States, with on-site dialysis services in more than 150 SNFs in Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
“We are looking forward to meeting face-to-face with other providers of healthcare services and professionals interested in learning about the remarkable changes occurring in our industry,” said Robert Aberman, senior vice president, population health at Dialyze Direct. “Today more and more SNFs are beginning to experience the benefits of MFD for patients with kidney failure, including an improved quality of life, more energy to participate in necessary rehabilitation activities and the freedom to take fewer medications. We welcome conversation about how we are improving dialysis for geriatric patients.”
Dialyze Direct representatives will be available at Exhibit Booth #1211 at Becker’s in-person event at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago April 24-28, 2022.

As part of the strategic collaboration, both organizations will actively pursue new business opportunities together, including home hemodialysis and chronic kidney disease (CKD) management, for patients in SNFs in several states across the nation. Dialyze Direct and Satellite Healthcare also intend to collaborate on research projects relating to dialysis, CKD and CKD management initiatives in the geriatric patient population.
“Satellite Healthcare and Dialyze Direct are both committed to early, ongoing intervention in a patient’s chronic kidney disease journey – meeting those patients where they are, regardless of where that may be,” said Jeff Goffman, Satellite Healthcare Chief Executive Officer. “Home-based therapy is the best option for patients in a SNF setting. Dialyze Direct successfully delivers that care.”
Together, both companies are better positioned to increase the impact they provide to SNFs and patients by delivering the best kidney care possible. Personalized treatment planning at the point of care is important, whether in the comfort of the patient’s own home or in the patient’s nursing facility. Brooklyn, N.Y., March 10, 2022 – On World Kidney Day, to support the theme of “Bridge the Knowledge Gap to Better Kidney Care,” Dialyze Direct, the nation’s leading provider of home hemodialysis services in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs), joins the nephrology and diabetes communities in raising awareness about improved dialysis for geriatric patients.
“Our mission is to lead the way in offering unparalleled kidney care for geriatric patients by healing both people and systems,” said Josh Rothenberg, President and Co-Founder of Dialyze Direct. “Our innovative dialysis within SNFs not only improves patients’ quality of life by returning to them opportunities to enjoy living but also allows individuals in our care to no longer be defined by their disease.”
Dialyze Direct was founded on the belief that dialysis is not a one-size-fits-all care regimen; rather, each patient deserves treatment tailored to their individual needs. Working from “dens” within SNFs, skilled nurses administer a dialysis regimen, pursuant to the physician’s order, best suited for each patient. In the SNF ESRD population, more frequent dialysis consistently outperforms the conventionally performed, thrice-weekly treatment.
Dialyze Direct’s proprietary more frequent dialysis regimen has proven to create better outcomes for elderly patients. For example, most feel better both during and after their dialysis. They recover more quickly, often in as little as 30 to 60 minutes, as opposed to conventional dialysis, which could take up to eight or more hours. Patients also have more energy to participate in other necessary rehabilitation and may take fewer medications.
According to a World Kidney Day Steering Committee report, chronic kidney disease (CKD) is increasing. The International Society of Nephrology estimated in 2019 that 850 million people suffer from a kidney disorder. Up to one in 10 adults have irreversible and progressive CKD. If CKD is uncontrolled and complications result, CKD can progress to a point where dialysis therapy is essential. At that point, dialysis can subsume a person’s entire life. Dialyze Direct furnishes a progressive alternative.
“Today in SNFs across the United States, our patients are receiving hemodialysis in their home environment by skilled professionals treating a person, not just a disease,” said Rothenberg. “They didn’t have to travel hours to and from a clinic to get care. In most cases an hour after treatment, they feel well enough to engage in other activities or visit with family or friends. We hope they find joy today that they would not have otherwise experienced. And we envision a world in which many, many other CKD sufferers soon have the same opportunity.”
